When/why did you decide to pursue a career in college athletics?

I started my college academic career undeclared, not really sure what I wanted to major in.  I explored a couple different options, business, international studies, and environmental studies before hearing about a new major called Sport Industry.  I grew up playing all kinds of sports so I thought this would be a terrific opportunity for me to combine two interests of mine, sport and business.  After taking a few classes in that major, as well as interning for 2 years with Ohio State’s Athletic Department, I knew this was the career path for me.  I love the exciting game atmosphere and being able to interact and enhance fans’ experiences on game days.

What is one thing that has surprised you about working in this profession?

I’ve been surprised by how small of a world the college athletics circle really is.  Through networking, the NACMA community, and conference meetings, you meet a lot of people.  It seems like you can almost always find someone in your athletic department that knows another sports professional at a specific school.

What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

Be engaged.  It was really simple advice but it stuck with me.  Ask questions, take the extra step necessary to show your supervisor that you can handle more responsibility, interact with fans/coaches/players and see what you can do to enhance their goals as well as your own.

Who is your role model in this industry and why?

I’ve been lucky enough to have met some incredible people in the industry already.  One that has had a huge impact on my career is Megan MacLeod. With there being turnover this past year in the Marketing Department, I had to step into roles normally filled by our Marketing Director.  Megan assisted me through it all and provided guidance to me when I first started to produce football and men’s basketball games.  She is actively involved in a number of organizations and always has a fun, high-spirited, personality which is why she is a role model of mine.

What are your career aspirations?

My career aspirations are to one day be an Athletic Director at a Division I University.

What has been your most memorable moment on the job?

The most memorable moment I have had on the job so far comes from this year’s March Madness Tournament.  Memphis hosted the South Regional Final this year and I was tasked with assisting with the event as Floor Producer.  Luke Maye’s buzzer beater versus Kentucky will be a moment I will never forget.

Share one funny moment or story from game day.

One of the craziest game day moments I have experienced happened to me during the first football game of the season this year.  It was my first football game working for Memphis, and since our Assistant Director had departed for a new job a few weeks earlier, I was given the task of producing the game from the press box.  Everything was going smoothly until halftime when we got hit with a power outage up in the press box.  I remember everyone joking around with me that I pushed the wrong button and made the power go out.  Luckily, we were able to adapt and the facilities team got the power back up and running for the 3rd quarter.  It just added another first for me that day, first Memphis football game, first football game I produced, and first game I worked where the power went out.

If you weren’t working in college athletics, what would you be doing?

If I wasn’t working in college athletics I think I would be working in the international business world.  I love to travel, meet new people, and experience different cultures.
