Mentor/Mentee Program Tip - Be Honest

Our NACMA Membership Development Committee continues our series focused on our Top 10 Tips to Building A Strong Mentor/Mentee Relationship. Just like a great Quentin Tarantino film, we're completely out of order. Today's tip is #6: Be Honest.

Why are we out of order, you ask? I was supposed to write this back at the end of February, then forgot. There ya go, honesty right off the bat. See, it feels good! When it comes to working with a mentor, it's important to "lay it all out there" as they say. Of course, you want to keep things professional, but don't be afraid to share your fears, triumphs, and reservations about the industry with your mentor. That's why they're there! Some things to keep in mind, while we're being honest with each other:

  • Mentors are here to help! If you're worried about an industry trend, falling short in a certain area of development, or struggling with something in the workplace, tell them! They will usually be able to help guide you through it. It's what they signed up for.
  • Don't be intimidated. Be direct with your mentor and let them know what you'd like out of your experience. If they ask you your opinion about something, don't hold back (within reason). Guess what? If you're off-base, your mentor is there to keep you on track.
  • When it's all over, give honest feedback in surveys about the program. If you have a suggestion on how it can be better or more efficient, how can we improve it if you don't tell us! Take a few minutes and give your best pointers once we follow up after convention.

That's it. Pretty simple. Go all in with your mentor, open up about your thoughts, and respond honestly when asked your opinion. If you do that, the chances are much more likely that you'll form a solid bond for the rest of your career.
