When/why did you decide to pursue a career in college athletics?

I thought of the possibility in high school when I first started taking design classes and all of my work focused on sports, but in 2016, my first year interning with Purdue Athletics when I was a sophomore there was when I committed to the pursuit. I had so many great experiences in that first year, I was addicted!

What is one thing that has surprised you about working in this profession?

I am constantly surprised by what a tight community there is among the people who work in collegiate athletics. It seems like you can find a connection to any school in the country via someone you work with, it’s amazing!

What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

“Treat every celebrity like an average person and treat any average person like a celebrity.”

I was given this advice by a mentor who is not in the sports industry, but I think this is a fantastic approach to fan engagement and customer service.

Who is your role model in this industry and why?

Chris Peludat, Associate AD-Marketing & Fan Experience at Purdue. Chris was my first boss in the industry and his leadership style will stick with me throughout my entire career. He had high expectations, always gave me honest advice, and instilled confidence in me to pursue my aspirations.

What are your career aspirations?

I'd like to get my Masters soon and work my way up to a Director of Marketing role for an NHL team (Chicago Blackhawks, if we are talking dream team).

What has been your most memorable moment on the job?

I have two. At Purdue, when trying to get his mic back, I was pulled on the field by Rod Woodson, one of our Super Bowl winning alumni, who was leading our 3rd Quarter Break Shout tradition, to dance with him. At Miami, for my first Miami vs. FSU football game, our entire stadium sang the chorus to Soulja Boy while the clock ran out as Miami won the game after an epic comeback. The crowd drained out the speakers, it was awesome!

Share one funny moment or story from game day.

My first year with Purdue Athletics, I was working a volleyball game. During one of the breaks we played musical volleyball with younger kids. I called a child out and apparently our student section didn’t agree, as I was boo’ed until the end of the break. My face was probably redder than my hair.

If you weren’t working in college athletics, what would you be doing?

I would probably be working as a graphic designer at a marketing firm.

Alejandro Rengifo, Associate Director of Marketing at University of Miami Athletics on Mary Kate:

MK has been a great asset for our team, she has only made us better and provided so much for our programs. I am proud of what she’s accomplished and excited for what’s to come!
