When/why did you decide to pursue a career in college athletics?

I was a gameday intern during my Junior year of college and throughout that year I had really fallen in love with the passion, excitement and thrill of gamedays as well as being able to build relationships and create special memories with fans. Following that year, I became an office intern and knew with 100% certainty that this was what I wanted to do, and I have loved every minute of it.

What is one thing that has surprised you about working in this profession?

In my short time in athletics the most surprising part has been the willingness of experienced professionals to help me grow both personally and professionally. Their openness to help and willingness to share advice has led to many great professional relationships in the industry and has helped me to be successful in my first year at Auburn.

What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

People don’t care about how much you know until they know how much you care.

Who is your role model in this industry and why?

Nathan Terry without a doubt. He is an outstanding mentor and his willingness to share information and talk through problems to find solutions is truly remarkable. As well as being exposed to his work ethic and passion he puts into everyday he is someone that I continually look up to.

What are your career aspirations?

I would love to eventually get to the point where I could lead my own marketing department and from there everything else is just a bonus.

What has been your most memorable moment on the job?

I would have to say it comes from this year with Auburn Gymnastics. Jan. 11th, 2019, we had our first sellout of the year and upset #4 LSU for the first time since 2013. We had a great production for both our fans and student-athletes and the energy in the arena was just outstanding.

Share one funny moment or story from game day.

I went out to do the mic check for the referee for a game when I was a student at Iowa State, and I looked up and it was my high school principal. Nothing like some awkward humor to make gameday a little more interesting.

If you weren’t working in college athletics, what would you be doing?

I was a music major before switching to communications so I would have to say that I would either be a musician or teaching music at some level.

Supervisor quote on YP of the Month:
Rhett is a tremendously passionate and impressive young Professional. His work ethic and drive to provide the greatest experience for his fans and student athletes is that of someone much more experienced than his entry level position. Rhett’s responsibilities and attitude make him more than deserving of the NACMA Young Professional of the Month. - Alex Gordan - Assistant Director of Marketing
