Don't Overcomplicate

There’s a dividing line between our self-created complexity and our ability to simplify and move forward. We often fall into a trap of doing things just because that’s how it has always been done. However, we need to examine those habits and figure out what holds true to its value and what can be trimmed. How can we simplify?

I’ve found that working with a new coaching staff allows this process to happen. Just last week, I had a discussion in regards to changing senior day to the first game of the season rather than the last game. Brilliant! This makes sense in so many ways. First, we can honor them all season instead of just one game before they leave the program. Second, the last game of the season is often left to be a deciding factor whether or not a team will qualify for the conference or NCAA tournament. It is already an emotional game with extra pressure, why add senior day tears to it? By stepping back from the traditional “last game is senior day”, we were able to reevaluate the main goal, to honor seniors, and simplify it.

Promotions such as senior day is a example of questioning traditional ways and to challenge the status quo and find an easier way when possible.

Happy simplifying! :)
