Make Sure to Keep In Touch

As young professionals in the sports industry, it’s about that time of year again when GA and post-grad internships are coming to a close, new jobs are being posted and thus the job search has begun again.

Whether it’s a co-worker or you who’s leaving your current athletic department,  or someone you met on an away trip or during a conference, there are people you meet in this industry whom you connect with that you want to keep in touch with.

How do you keep in touch and maintain the relationship?

  • Make sure to send a follow up note, preferably handwritten but email works to within a week after your former co-worker leaves or you meet someone.
  • Follow up on a monthly or bi-monthly basis depending on the relationship.
  • Don’t always follow up with an email or letter, but also schedule a call every once in awhile or meet with them in person at conferences etc. if possible.

You never know where former co-workers or people you meet will end up down the road which is why taking the time to keep in touch and putting in the effort to maintain relationships is not only important but could help you career wise down the road.
