#NACMAYP: Characteristics of a “next generation marketer”

Although I currently work in ticketing at the University of Texas, I aspire to work in marketing some day. As I plot my future and through talking with a former boss, I was challenged to think about what it takes to be a next generation marketer.

While it might seem like a basic concept, I’ve determined that the next generation marketer needs to be more than just savvy with technology – they need to be skilled with technology.

Technology has advanced to help sales and marketing teams. For example, you can target specific markets perhaps better than ever before – based on age, location, interests, previous likes, etc. This means that advertising can go directly to a target market and not to those who are unlikely to buy. The next generation marketer needs to be able to perform tried and true marketing tactics like defining a target market, but execute using new avenues afforded by technology.

I also believe that the next generation marketer needs to have sales experience, with proficiency in sales technologies. Salesforce is a great CRM tool that I’ve become familiar with in my experience. Not only does Salesforce allow you to take notes on fans, but you can also gain insights like what links on your website they have clicked, which emails they opened and which emails they deleted. When used correctly, a CRM tool like Salesforce can help marketers better service fans. I believe having experience with a platform like this is an important for the next generation marketer.

As technology advances, marketers must adapt. I encourage other young professionals to not just be savvy with technology, but become skilled with it to set the standard and drive innovation among the next generation of marketers.
