Small School Blog: Do It Well

Do It Well

In my role as Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs at Central Washington University I oversee the areas of corporate sponsorships, branding and licensing, marketing and promotions, ticket sales and revenue generation. While we may be a relatively small Division II school, I strive to not use that as an excuse or reason not to put on great home events for our fans and donors. While we all talk about how we can’t control what happens on the court or field, we can take pride in what we can control off the field and that is putting on a really great show.

One of my favorite quotes is from Walt Disney. This quote has helped me in my everyday preparations for CWU athletic events and in all of the areas that I oversee. He said, “Whatever you do, do it well. Do it so well that when people see you do it they will want to come back and see you do it again and they will want to bring others and show them how well you do what you do.” It’s that same desire I’m looking for in my graduate assistants, student interns and hopefully the same drive that we all expect in our lives and in those whom we work with. I love the idea that whatever it is that you do, no matter how simple it might be that you do it so well that others will be impressed by what you do and want to show others how well you do it.

In the end, our goal at CWU Athletics is to be a program with which people are proud to be associated. By doing our jobs well and providing great experiences for our student-athletes, coaches, fans and donors, we are hopefully building an athletic department that people will want to bring others to and show them how well we do what we do.

In closing, take some time to evaluate what it is that you or your department does well and what can you do to make it even better!
