Getting Involved: Volunteering in College Athletics

Looking for ways to expand your skill set and professional network? Conferences, bowl games and other tournaments/championships rely heavily on volunteers to execute their events and provide a great opportunity for young professionals to get experience and break out of their comfort zone.

Your conference office is a great place to start. Conference offices typically have smaller staffs and look for assistance from volunteers to execute championship and other events (media days, etc). Volunteer opportunities range from collecting quotes in a postgame press conference to assisting with in-game promotions and preparing a venue for an event. Larger championships usually come with ancillary events (fan fests, 5K runs, etc...) that require volunteer assistance (typically coordinated by the local sports commission or Convention and Visitors Bureau).

If an NCAA Championship event is coming to your area, do your research to see who's hosting the event (usually a local university, professional sports team or conference that is headquartered in the area) and reach out to see what volunteer opportunities might be available.

Don't write off an opportunity because it doesn't specifically relate to your job/desired field. Most volunteer opportunities relate to communications/media operations or game operations. Adding these experiences to your marketing background will give you a broader point of view and perspective of collegiate athletics and beef up your resume.

These events are great opportunities to develop your network and meet colleagues from other institutions, your conference office and others in the industry.
